Jika Anda sering mendengarkan seseorang berbicara atau dalam film berbahasa Inggris mengucapkan kalimat yang sulit dimengerti atau jika diterjemahkan artinya malah ngawur, bisa jadi yang diucapkan itu adalah idiom.
Idiom adalah frasa atau ungkapan dalam suatu bahasa yang memiliki makna khusus yang tidak dapat diterjemahkan secara harfiah. Arti idiom tidak dapat dipahami secara langsung dari makna kata-kata individunya. Idiom biasanya digunakan secara figuratif untuk mengungkapkan suatu konsep, situasi, atau perasaan dengan cara yang khas dan tidak langsung.
Idiom biasanya digunakan dalam konteks percakapan sehari-hari dan sastra. Memahami idiom sangat penting dalam berkomunikasi dengan bahasa yang tepat dan efektif. Saya sudah merangkum sebanyak 77 idiom yang sering diucapkan dalam percakapan sehari-hari, simak selengkapnya berikut:

  5. Apple of my eye – Seseorang yang sangat dikasihi.
    Contoh: “My daughter is the apple of my eye.”
  6. Barking up the wrong tree – Salah sasaran.
    Contoh: “If you think I took your pen, you’re barking up the wrong tree.”
  7. Beat around the bush – Berbicara berbelit-belit.
    Contoh: “Stop beating around the bush and tell me what you really think.”
  8. Bite the bullet – Menghadapi sesuatu yang sulit dengan berani.
    Contoh: “I don’t want to take the test, but I guess I’ll have to bite the bullet.”
  9. Break a leg – Semoga sukses (biasa digunakan di dunia teater).

  10. Butterflies in my stomach – Merasa gugup atau cemas.
    Contoh: “I have butterflies in my stomach before the big presentation.”
  11. Call it a day – Menghentikan pekerjaan untuk hari itu.

  12. Cold feet – Merasa ragu atau takut sebelum melakukan sesuatu.

  14. Cry over spilled milk – Menyesali sesuatu yang sudah terjadi dan tidak dapat diubah.

  15. Curiosity killed the cat – Keingintahuan yang berlebihan dapat berakibat buruk.
