Jika Anda sering mendengarkan seseorang berbicara atau dalam film berbahasa Inggris mengucapkan kalimat yang sulit dimengerti atau jika diterjemahkan artinya malah ngawur, bisa jadi yang diucapkan itu adalah idiom.
Idiom adalah frasa atau ungkapan dalam suatu bahasa yang memiliki makna khusus yang tidak dapat diterjemahkan secara harfiah. Arti idiom tidak dapat dipahami secara langsung dari makna kata-kata individunya. Idiom biasanya digunakan secara figuratif untuk mengungkapkan suatu konsep, situasi, atau perasaan dengan cara yang khas dan tidak langsung.
Idiom biasanya digunakan dalam konteks percakapan sehari-hari dan sastra. Memahami idiom sangat penting dalam berkomunikasi dengan bahasa yang tepat dan efektif. Saya sudah merangkum sebanyak 77 idiom yang sering diucapkan dalam percakapan sehari-hari, simak selengkapnya berikut:

1. Spill the tea – Membagikan atau mengungkapkan informasi yang menarik atau kontroversial. Contoh: “I have some insider information about the party last night. Do you want me to spill the tea?”
2. A penny for your thoughts – Meminta pendapat seseorang.
   Contoh: “You seem lost in thought. A penny for your thoughts?”
3. Actions speak louder than words – Tindakan lebih berarti daripada kata-kata.
   Contoh: “Don’t just say you’ll help; actions speak louder than words.”
4. All ears – Setia mendengarkan.
   Contoh: “I’m all ears. Tell me what happened.”
5. Apple of my eye – Seseorang yang sangat dikasihi.
   Contoh: “My daughter is the apple of my eye.”
6. Barking up the wrong tree – Salah sasaran.
   Contoh: “If you think I took your pen, you’re barking up the wrong tree.”
7. Beat around the bush – Berbicara berbelit-belit.
   Contoh: “Stop beating around the bush and tell me what you really think.”
8. Bite the bullet – Menghadapi sesuatu yang sulit dengan berani.
   Contoh: “I don’t want to take the test, but I guess I’ll have to bite the bullet.”
9. Break a leg – Semoga sukses (biasa digunakan di dunia teater).
   Contoh: “Break a leg on your opening night!”
10. Butterflies in my stomach – Merasa gugup atau cemas.
    Contoh: “I have butterflies in my stomach before the big presentation.”
11. Call it a day – Menghentikan pekerjaan untuk hari itu.
    Contoh: “It’s getting late; let’s call it a day and continue tomorrow.”
12. Cold feet – Merasa ragu atau takut sebelum melakukan sesuatu.
    Contoh: “I had cold feet before my first job interview.”
13. Cost an arm and a leg – Sangat mahal.
    Contoh: “That designer handbag costs an arm and a leg!”
14. Cry over spilled milk – Menyesali sesuatu yang sudah terjadi dan tidak dapat diubah.
    Contoh: “There’s no point crying over spilled milk. Let’s move on.”
15. Curiosity killed the cat – Keingintahuan yang berlebihan dapat berakibat buruk.
    Contoh: “Don’t snoop around in their business. Remember, curiosity killed the cat.”
16. Don’t count your chickens before they hatch – Jangan terlalu optimis sebelum sesuatu terjadi. Contoh: “We haven’t won the game yet. Don’t count your chickens before they hatch.”
17. Drop the ball – Gagal melakukan tugas dengan baik.
    Contoh: “I dropped the ball and forgot to send the report on time.”
18. Early bird catches the worm – Siapa yang cepat dia dapat.
    Contoh: “I woke up early and finished my work. The early bird catches the worm.”
19. Fit as a fiddle – Sehat dan bugar.
    Contoh: “Despite her age, she’s fit as a fiddle and loves to go hiking.”
20. Get a taste of your own medicine – Mengalami hal yang sama yang pernah dilakukan kepada orang lain.
    Contoh: “He’s always making fun of others, but now he’s getting a taste of his own medicine.”
21. Give someone the cold shoulder – Mengabaikan seseorang atau bersikap dingin terhadapnya. Contoh: “After the argument, she gave him the cold shoulder.”
22. Hit the nail on the head – Mengatakan atau melakukan sesuatu yang tepat.
    Contoh: “You hit the nail on the head with your analysis of the situation.”
23. In hot water – Dalam masalah atau kesulitan.
    Contoh: “He’s in hot water after breaking the vase.”
24. It takes two to tango – Diperlukan kerja sama dari kedua belah pihak untuk mencapai sesuatu. Contoh: “The project won’t succeed unless both teams collaborate. It takes two to tango.”
25. Kill two birds with one stone – Menyelesaikan dua hal sekaligus dengan satu Tindakan.
    Contoh: “By taking the train to work, I can exercise and save money. It’s killing two birds with one stone.”
26. Let the cat out of the bag – Membocorkan rahasia.
    Contoh: “Don’t let the cat out of the bag about the surprise party.”
27. Miss the boat – Ketinggalan kesempatan.
    Contoh: “I missed the boat by not investing in that company.”
28. On the same page – Memiliki pemahaman yang sama tentang sesuatu.
    Contoh: “We need to get everyone on the same page before starting the project.”
29. Piece of cake – Sangat mudah.
    Contoh: “The exam was a piece of cake. I finished it in half the time.”
30. Put all your eggs in one basket – Memasukkan semua sumber daya atau harapan pada satu hal yang berisiko.
    Contoh: “Diversify your investments so you don’t put all your eggs in one basket.”
31. Rain on someone’s parade – Merusak kegembiraan atau keberhasilan seseorang.
    Contoh: “Don’t rain on her parade. Let her enjoy her achievement.”
32. Saved by the bell – Diselamatkan oleh situasi yang tak terduga.
    Contoh: “I almost missed the bus, but I was saved by the bell.”
33. The ball is in your court – Giliranmu untuk mengambil tindakan atau membuat keputusan.
    Contoh: “I’ve presented my ideas. Now the ball is in your court to decide.”
34. The best of both worlds – Mendapatkan manfaat dari dua hal yang berbeda.

35. The early bird gets the worm – Orang yang cepat beraksi mendapatkan kesempatan terbaik. Contoh: “I arrived at the store early and got the best deal. The early bird gets the worm.”
36. The whole nine yards – Segalanya atau seluruhnya.
    Contoh: “I’m planning a surprise party, so I want to go the whole nine yards and make it amazing.”
37. Through thick and thin – Dalam keadaan baik dan buruk.

38. Throw in the towel – Menyerah atau mengakhiri sesuatu.

50. He has bigger fish to fry – Dia memiliki masalah atau tugas yang lebih penting.
    Contoh: “I wanted to talk to him, but he has bigger fish to fry at the moment.”
51. It’s a piece of cake – Sangat mudah.
    Contoh: “Don’t worry about the test. It’s a piece of cake.”
52. Let sleeping dogs lie – Biarkan masalah yang sudah selesai tidak diganggu.

67. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket – Jangan meletakkan semua harapan atau investasi pada satu hal yang berisiko.
    Contoh: “Invest in different stocks to diversify your portfolio. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.”
68. Easy come, easy go – Cepat datang, cepat pergi.
    Contoh: “He won the lottery, but he spent all the money just as quickly. Easy come, easy go.”
69. Fortune favors the bold – Keberuntungan cenderung menghampiri mereka yang berani mengambil risiko.
    Contoh: “He took a chance and started his own business. Fortune favors the bold.”
70. Hit the jackpot – Mendapatkan keberuntungan besar atau sukses.

    Contoh: “Can you help me move this heavy table?” – “Sure, no sweat!”
